Developmental Language Delay (DLD) Awareness Day

11th Oct 2022

DLD Awareness Day

Developmental Language Awareness Day is on Friday 14th October 2022. On Thursday 13th October 2022 the children in Sion Mills Speech and Language Class will wear purple and yellow colours to raise awareness of DLD. Our theme for this year is Growing with DLD.

We have planned an action packed day for the children. The children will be participating in DLD P. E. activities, decorating cupcakes with yellow and purple icing, Speech and Language outdoor activities, and planting bulbs.

Finally, we will be having a class party to celebrate DLD Awareness Day.

What is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?

Developmental Language Disorder is a common Speech and Language Disorder that can effect some pupils in most classes.

DLD can effect speech sounds, understanding of language and use of language.

Here are some strategies to support your child with DLD

  • Get child's attention before talking.
  • Use pictures and written notes to support understanding.
  • Explain the meaning of new words.
  • Help the child put sentences together to tell a story.
  • Allow plenty of time for the child to respond.
  • Encourage child to ask questions when they don't understand.
