DLD Awareness Day
Friday 14th October 2022 is DLD Awareness Day- Speech and Language Therapists, Teachers and Pupils are encouraged to wear the colours purple and yellow.
Our theme for this year is Growing with DLD.
On Thursday 13th 2022 October the children in Sion Mills Speech and Language Class will wear purple and yellow to raise awareness of DLD. We will be having an action packed day to celebrate DLD day. The children will be participating in DLD P.E, decorating cupcakes with purple and yellow icing, Speech and Language outdoor activity, including planting bulbs.
Finally, we will be having a DLD party for the children
What is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?
Developmental Language Disorder is a common Speech and Language disorder that can affect some pupils in most classes.
DLD can impact on a child’s speech sounds, understanding of language and use of language.
Here are some strategies to support your child with DLD
- Give the child your full attention.
- Use pictures and written notes to support their understanding.
- Get the child’s attention before talking.
- Explain the meaning of new words.
- Help the child put sentences together to tell a story.
- Allow the child plenty of time to respond.
- Encourage children to ask questions when they don’t understand.
- Praise all attempts at communication.
